BHOPAL: THE CONTINUING TRAGEDY

Dear all,

Lokayat is organising a series of programs on Aug 6-7, Friday-Saturday, on occasion of Hiroshima Day in memory of the thousands who died in the Bhopal Gas Tragedy to highlight the heroic struggle of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy victims. It is also to highlight that despite the scale of the tragedy, the government is passing laws to permit Western Multinational corporations to shift their dirty, hazardous, polluting industries to India in the name of Development, thereby creating the conditions for disasters bigger than the Bhopal gas tragedy. Most significantly, there is a bill pending in Parliament, the Nuclear Liability Bill, which proposes that in case of an accident at a nuclear power plant, a limited compensation will be paid by the Government, thereby freeing the equipment supplier from all liability!

It is an invitation to disaster. Freed of all liabilities, the foreign suppliers will deliberately try to cut corners in order to maximize their profits. Like what happened in Bhopal, and led to the gas leak.
